AGA Completes Transformational Viva Verde Program
Quentin and Patti help Councilmember, Chris Riley, and Enviro-queen, Brandi Clark, judge the Weirdest Commute Contest on National PARKing Day.
On June 14, 2009 Austin Green Art launched into a sixteen-week odyssey working with forty at-risk 14-24 year olds each workday. While we’ve done projects with “kids from ages 1 to 92” on many occasions, we had never worked specifi cally with at-risk young people or structured activities to be “full-time” work. The program was structured to put two shifts of twenty participants “to work” in a morning and afternoon shift each day. On their off-shift they had classroom time for “job-readiness training.” Our staff of three consisted of Robby, Dave and myself. The schedule I developed leading up to the start of the program balanced work at AGA Central (the warehouse and garden), job-site work at client locations and field trips, films and presentations about environmental issues and art-making. Viva Verde was a $2 million stimulus-funded program run by Goodwill, which placed 600 participants at job-sites around the city. The kids were paid $7.25/hr for the eight-hour day

Watershed Protection is encouraging Austinites to reduce water pollution by scooping their dog’s poop.
Austin’s 100,000 dogs create 60,000 pounds of bacteria-laden waste daily.

Campout Downtown — July 6 & 7
“Polymorphic Plastic Parade” is a 5-week tour, traveling in a bus that operates on waste vegetable oil, created by IAN GAMBLE AND SARAH WITT. The tour will be stopping at 10 urban and rural outdoor locations around the United States to set up a temporary tipi village, which will be free and open to the public. The tipis are made with salvaged and renewable resources. The tipi covers are sewn from discarded plastic lumber tarps. The skeleton is constructed from locally harvested bamboo, an
invasive species.
In this exhibit, one of the waste byproducts from contemporary housing development, woven polyethylene, is recontextualized as useful material. The salvaging of these tarps, which are typically seen as waste, parallels the traditional Plains Indians’ approach to the buffalo. The cultural appropriation of tipis venerates the Native Americans’ respectful method of living, in which resources are efficiently employed. The juxtaposition of modern waste materials with the humble iconic structure of the tipi will encourage visitors to contemplate issues of excess and sustainability in present times.
Join us to camp out at the future Federal courthouse site at Republic Square Park, 5th and San Antonio on July 6 & 7. There will be a community meal and additional programming.

Our recent exhibition at Flatbed Press with Annette Lawrence reached far and wide! People are interested and concerned about junk mail’s impact on the environment and excited about “free paper” as a creative material. Gigantic Light Sculpture at Armadillo
Green Collar, LLC is Austin Green Art’s newly-formed for-profit design firm. The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar commissioned us to create a forty foot-wide light sculpture for the entry feature of this year’s event.
